Linux
Desktop operating system
The Linux desktop operating system most frequently used at the Faculty of Physics is Ubuntu, above all with LTS (Long Term Support).
Ubuntu is a Debian- based Linux distribution, which aims at
- closing the digital gap
- user friendliness
- accessibility
Ubuntu uses the Debian DFSG (Debian Free Software Guidelines) for the package sources "main" and "universe", but does not categorically exclude software packages that will have to be paid for.
The Linux desktop computers are automatically installed via PXE-Boot by means of FAI (Fully Automatic Installation).
Server operating system
The Faculty of Physics uses RHEL as server operating system, and for its collaboration with Fermilab and Cern, (for cost reasons) Scientific Linux (SL).
