X2GO on macOS
Installation on macOS 10.8.x Mountain Lion, macOS 10.9.x Mavericks and macOS 10.11.x El Capitan
- Download the newest X2Go Client (macOS version)

- Download the newest X11 Quartz server
X2Go requires a X11 server. The newest XQuartz X11 server can be downloaded here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/
- Install X11 XQuartz server
After the installation, it is necessary to undertake a logout and to login again, to make XQuartz the default server.
- Install X2Go Client and follow the instructions
- Start XQuartz
The XQuartz X11 server always has to be opened before beginning a X2Go session!

Configuration of the X2Go Client
- Start X11 / XQuartz
The XQuartz X11 Server must always be opened before beginning a X2Go session.
Open X2Go Client
The window "Session preferences" opens by itself (otherwise click on the paper symbol in the upper bar)
- Session preferences
Open the Session preferences in the X2Go window (paper symbol on the upper left)
Configure the session:- Session name: any, e.g. LMU
- Host:
- th-sv-gar-sv-login01.garching.physik.uni-muenchen.de (Garching)
- th-sv-gar-sv-login02.garching.physik.uni-muenchen.de (Garching)
- Login: Your LMU name (without the @-ending), e.g. Max.Mustermann
- SSH Port: 22
- Use RSA/DSA key for ssh connection: leave empty
- Session type: XFCE or LXQT
- Leave configuration with OK
- You possibly have to set up XQuartz for X2Go
If XQuartz is used as X11 Server on macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion, X2Go Client has to be informed. Click on the screw-wrench in the upper left bar in order to open the settings window. If not indicated yet, select XQuartz for the X11 application and supply the right version.
- Open a session
Choose the session which was just generated (on the right hand side of the X2Go window). Insert your login and password and press OK.
When first connecting to the X2Go server, there will possibly be a safety message with a request of server authentication. Confirm with "Yes".
